Since I can remember, I have always had painful periods. I didn’t think that this was out of the ordinary at all, I was led to believe that during your period you will be in a lot of pain, your emotions will be all over the place, and you will feel exhausted. For anyone currently believing this I want to make one thing clear to you, this is not normal.
I thought it was normal when, at 17 years old, I fainted down the concrete steps in the garden because of my period pain. I thought it was normal when I would feel so exhausted that I couldn’t face the thought of getting out of bed, even though I hadn’t done anything requiring any energy.
Like most of you reading this, I have been told multiple times that my pain is not real, or that it is normal period pain. I was even accused by one doctor that I was making up the pain because I was addicted to the pain medication they were prescribing to me! The most frustrating part of this is that I knew there was something wrong with me and no one would listen or believe me! I finally turned a corner on 31st March 2017 when I described my symptoms to a doctor and not only did he listen to me, but he came up with a potential diagnosis of Endometriosis and created the beginning of a diagnosis and treatment plan with me.
